Pieter Rutsaert is an agricultural economist with a focus on markets and value chains, based in Nairobi. His areas of specialization include sustainable food value chain development, food risk communication, product valuation through experimental auctions and gender research.
His work focuses on seed value chains in Eastern Africa with special emphasis on demand and supply of maize seed, including seed market intelligence and demand assessment, business models and market development strategies linked inter alia to the STMA project.
He obtained his M.Sc. in Tropical Natural Resources Management from KULeuven and a Ph.D. from Ghent University. Before joining CIMMYT, he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at IRRI in the Philippines and as research director for Haystack International, a market research consultancy firm in Belgium.
