Ardeshir B. Damania, a UC Davis researcher, was awarded the Frank N. Meyer Medal for Plant Genetic Resources for his decades-long work conserving wheat diversity, including a dramatic 1991 rescue of the world’s wheat seed collection from war-torn Syria. Working with ICARDA at the time, Damania personally ensured the seeds’ safe passage out of the region, after which the priceless collection found a permanent home at CIMMYT in Mexico. CIMMYT became the long-term guardian of this global wheat heritage, preserving it for research, breeding, and the development of climate-resilient crops that underpin future food security.
