Bram Govaerts, Director General of CIMMYT, highlighted during his visit to India for DialogueNEXT that the country has the potential to spark a second Green Revolution by investing in agricultural research and development and strengthening global partnerships. Building on CIMMYT’s historic role alongside Norman Borlaug and M.S. Swaminathan in the original Green Revolution, Govaerts underscored the urgent need to address today’s challenges—climate change, stagnating yields, shrinking landholdings, and food security—through innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability. He pointed to maize as a rising “wonder crop” with scope for productivity gains and emphasized that renewed investment, collaboration with ICAR and other institutions, and adoption of climate-smart technologies will be vital for advancing resilient, nutritious, and sustainable agri-food systems in India and the Global South.
