Ceremony and pine for Hugo C贸rdova

In memory of revered maize breeder and CIMMYT distinguished scientist Hugo C贸rdova, who died 25 December 2009, CIMMYT staff and management joined with Am茅rica C贸rdova, Hugo鈥檚 wife, and friends of the family in a simple, solemn ceremony on Wednesday 20 January 2010 to plant a Pino Michoacana Mart铆nez in the pine grove near the main building at El Bat谩n. The planting followed the opening presentations for 2010 Science Week, which included a tribute by Tom Lumpkin on the center鈥檚 behalf to C贸rdova and Norman Borlaug. 鈥淭hese two hunger fighters are part of the CIMMYT 鈥榩anteon鈥欌攑eople whom we should all remember and emulate,鈥 said Lumpkin. In the planting ceremony, Marianne B盲nziger briefly mentioned Hugo鈥檚 achievements and the way he constantly challenged colleagues and partners to do their best in pursuit of CIMMYT鈥檚 mission. Am茅rica thanked all present for their support and kind words. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a great comfort for me in this difficult moment to hear CIMMYT directors鈥 recognition of the value of Hugo鈥檚 work and the esteem and affection colleagues had for him,鈥 she said. B盲nziger announced that similar commemorative trees would be planted in honor of Hugo at the Agua Fr铆a and Tlaltizap谩n experiment stations.
