Sustainable Wheat and Maize Production in Afghanistan

This project aims to sustainably increase wheat and maize production in Afghanistan through the introduction of improved, drought-tolerant seed varieties that are adapted to the diverse agro-climatic zones of Afghanistan, dissemination of improved seed and agronomic practices through innovative, multi-partner hubs, capacity building of Afghan scientists and non-governmental agencies and a participatory annual crop workshop.

The project goals include increasing the spread and production of high-yielding, disease resistant maize and wheat varieties, improved agronomic practices, a greater number of trained scientists and extension workers in Afghanistan, enhanced communication between national and international stakeholders and greater capacity for national programs to continue such activities after the duration of the project.

It is a collaborative effort primarily with the Agricultural Research Institute of Afghanistan and with leading international organizations such as International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas and the U.N. Food and Agricultural Organization, national partners, extension workers, and, most importantly, Afghan farmers.


  • The country program will focus on crop and livestock intensification and better water management.
  • There will be linkages between the improvement of wheat varieties and agronomy, the development of forages for small ruminants, and community-based watershed management.
  • ACIAR’s project partners will work with established programs in agricultural extension and community development, in order to promote adoption of the research results.
