Sridhar Bhavani’s expertise lies in wheat rust genetics, pathology and breeding. He was previously based in Kenya, where he coordinated the stem rust screening nurseries for East Africa, facilitating pre-breeding and breeding components for several global partners with an objective to develop durable stem rust resistant varieties. These efforts have resulted in the release of more than 150 varieties resistant to Ug99 in developing countries.
Bhavani is also interested in understanding the race-non-specificity of genes that confer durability and deploy resistance in breeding. He focuses on identifying and characterizing new sources of resistance to rust diseases and has ongoing collaborative projects with a number of organizations including Montana State University (BREAD), Cornell University (DGGW), ICAR and USDA.
