Olaf Erenstein is the director of CIMMYT’s socioeconomics program, researching socioeconomic constraints and opportunities to increase food security and reduce poverty in maize- and wheat-based agri-food systems in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
The program includes a research-for-development team of around 30 internationally recruited economists and specialists in foresight, targeting, geographic information systems, adoption and impact, gender and social inclusiveness, and markets and value chains. Since joining CIMMYT in 2004, he has worked in South Asia, and eastern and southern Africa.
Prior to joining CIMMYT, he worked in Pakistan, Mexico and West Africa. His research has focused on research and development implications based on agricultural system and innovation analysis in developing countries. He has a doctorate in agricultural economics and masters in agricultural economics and agronomy from Wageningen University.
