Mike Olsen is an upstream research coordinator for CIMMYT’s global maize program. He supervises a diverse global team of scientists working to improve maize breeding efficiency through implementation of modern genotyping and phenotyping applications. Olsen and his team establish and maintain diverse partnerships to access cutting-edge technology and to implement solutions with a network of maize variety development and seed delivery partners serving low and middle income countries.
He also leads a multi-institutional team focused on genotyping and sequencing services through the CGIAR’s Excellence in Breeding platform (EiB). The aim of the platform is to assist with improving the efficiency of breeding programs across the CGIAR and national agricultural research system partners. Within EiB, Olsen’s group is focused on assisting teams with cost-benefit analysis of genotyping applications, finding best-cost solutions for genotyping to support breeding efforts and application-based training.
