Gender and Social Inclusion Specialist

Hom Gartaula leads CIMMYT’s gender and social inclusion portfolio for South Asia. He is an interdisciplinary social scientist specializing in gender and social inclusion, youth, agriculture, climate change and food security. Rooted in an actor-oriented approach and human wellbeing perspective, his research focuses on gendered dimensions of food security, on-farm conservation of crop genetic resources, farmers’ indigenous knowledge and its transmission, participatory technology development, farmer-scientist research collaboration and governance, and labor out-migration and its implications for small-scale agriculture.

Gartaula holds a PhD in Sociocultural Anthropology and an MSc in Knowledge Management and Social Change from Wageningen University. Before joining CIMMYT, he taught at the University of Winnipeg and worked as a program manager at an international corporation based in Canada.
