Deepmala Sehgal

Wheat Geneticist/Molecular Breeder

Deepmala Sehgal is a molecular breeder with CIMMYT’s Global Wheat Program, based in Mexico. Her research focus includes the application of genomics-assisted approaches to accelerate the development of stress-tolerant wheat varieties, and the optimization of genomic selection (GS) models for complex traits.

Sehgal leads and manages projects related to identification of novel genes or quantitative trait loci (QTL) for agronomic traits including grain yield under abiotic stress environments (drought and heat stress specifically), disease resistance (tan spot, crown spot, stem and yellow rusts, karnal bunt) and nutritional traits (grain Zn and Fe) using QTL mapping and genome-wide association study (GWAS) approaches. To facilitate marker-assisted introgression/selection of important QTL identified in breeders’ germplasm and diverse germplasm panels, she designs KASP (Kompetitive Allele Specific PCR) assays and integrates them in commercial genotyping platforms such as DArTAG and INTERTEK to make them accessible to CIMMYT breeders and scientists worldwide.
