Mexico is newly appreciative of the function of the food system; agriculture is the focus of public policies: EMM

  • As part of the celebration of the 100o birthday of the father of the Green Revolution, Norman E. Borlaug, SAGARPA’s Secretary Enrique Martínez y Martinez said that the greatest increase in food production will have to come from developing countries, where challenges are focused in small-scale farms.
  • Secretary Martínez y Martínez highlighted that farmers from northwest Mexico are an example at the national level for their outputs through many years, with the support of applied research, that has allowed to put science at the service of farmers.
  • Thomas Lumpkin, Director General of the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), said that, in line with Borlaug’s legacy, there is a renewed partnership between the Government of Mexico and CIMMYT that is driving the MasAgro initiative and other components that are guided by the principle of global food security.
