Introduction
RustMapper aims to provide up to date information on the current status and potential
spread of wheat stem rust race Ug99 or derivatives. This new strain of stem rust (Ug99) was discovered
in Uganda / Kenya in 1999 and threatens most previously disease-resistant wheat varieties. It is estimated
that as much as 80 percent of all wheat varieties planted in Asia and Africa are susceptible to this new strain.
The spores of wheat rust are mostly carried by wind over long distances and across continents.
RustMapper uses Google Earth as a visualization tool and contains the following information:
- Current known sites & status of Ug99 or derivatives
- Country summary information on wheat production and susceptibility to Ug99
- Near-real time wind trajectories from known sites using the NOAA
HYSPLIT model
- Major wheat production areas in Africa & Asia
Download RustMapper
To download RustMapper KMZ – click HERE
- If Google Earth is installed, the RustMapper file will automatically open in Google Earth.
- To Run RustMapper, Google Earth needs to be installed first - click
HERE to download if not installed.
(NB: RustMapper requires version 4 or above of Google Earth)
- After initial download, upon exit from Google Earth you will be asked to save of the kmz file
in "my places" within Google Earth click Yes.
- RustMapper is networked linked, so is automatically updated with the latest information.
- It is recommended to have web links open directly within Google Earth. To enable this in
Google Earth select: Tools/Options/General then disable "show web results in external browser".
RustMapper Enhancements
RustMapper may be enhanced with the following real-time climate data in Google Earth:
(both are automatically updated after opening and saving in Google Earth)
- NASA Daily Rainfall Accumulation Data (TRMM) – click
HERE
- WEER.NL Actual & 5 day forecast WMO meteorological station data
(NB: This site is in Dutch, but gives very clear and simple weather data)
