  • Taking stock on Sustainable Intensification Research for Impact in ESA: Implications and Strategies for Future Work

Theme:

Food and nutrition security need to be pursued as the foundation to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, promote gender equality, improve health, and ensure environmental sustainability. Achieving food and nutrition security in eastern and southern African nations, face multiple challenges requiring concerted actions across multiple fronts though primarily through more integrative approaches to climate adaptation. Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) offers the opportunity to develop such approaches, by addressing the multiple dimensions of sustainable development: increased food production, economic growth, equal opportunity, and environmental sustainability.

This meeting will take stock of the progress made during the last 6 years, by the Sustainable Intensification of maize and legume farming systems for food security in Eastern and Southern Africa (SIMLESA) program, and develop future R4D agendas.

When, where and what?

Between the 19 and 22nd of June, the SIMLESA community will gather in Arusha, Tanzania to discuss achievements and opportunities for transformational changes across these four dimensions. The meeting will include four keynote speakers to briefly introduce each individual topic, followed by short country summary talks, and small thematic group discussion forums. A final plenary session will summarise what are the new challenges, and a climate smart agriculture framework to address them.
