A) Research Program/Training towards Postgraduate Degrees (postgraduate students)

Students registered for an MSc or PhD at universities of recognized prestige can conduct all or part of their thesis research at CIMMYT. Topics for research are offered by CIMMYT scientists based on CIMMYT priorities and research projects. The CIMMYT scientist supervising a student’s research will be a member of the student's thesis committee. Training varies between 1-3 years, depending on the research. The research expenses/operational costs are born by either CIMMYT’s or student’s projects. However, students must seek funding to cover living expenses, medical insurance, and travel costs to and from CIMMYT. Students from developed countries are especially encouraged to cover either all or a part of their research costs, depending on the nature of the research. Full scholarships through special projects or CIMMYT grants may be offered to candidates from developing countries through special adverts.

B) Research Training – non degree (student associates, visiting students, summer interns)

Non-degree training program is offered to students from either developed or developing countries who want experience to help them with their career decision. The program may range from one month to one year. Acceptance of student associates depends on agreement with relevant CIMMYT scientist who will be his/her supervisor during stay at CIMMYT. Student associates must be able to cover related costs (medical insurance, travel, and living expenses) themselves or through the sponsor. Before leaving CIMMYT, student associate is required to present a report on the training s/he received.

C) Specialized Technical Training (technical associates)

This program is for technical or scientific staff from partner national research institutions, universities, and other organizations who come for individual technically-oriented training at the request of their employer. The length of stay can vary from one week to three months. Each technical associate usually works under the supervision of a CIMMYT scientist. Related costs (medical insurance, travel and living expenses) have to be borne by associate’s employer or sponsor. Before leaving CIMMYT, a technical associate is required to present a report on the training s/he received.

D) Specialized Professional Training (visiting scientists/researchers)

This program provides highly-focused, non-academic training opportunities to contribute to a researcher’s professional development within a specific discipline. Offered throughout the year, duration varies from one week to six months depending on the selected discipline and project. Related costs (medical insurance, travel, and living expenses) must be covered either by the institution proposing the candidate, the sponsor, or the research project.

I) Modular program (1 - 6 week courses)

These courses are designed for researchers and research technicians currently working in national research programs with the goal of strengthening national cereal improvement and production programs through ‘hands-on’ training. The aim is to enhance knowledge in maize or wheat improvement and to review and extend fundamental ideas about special breeding techniques, seed production, and the management issues necessary for a successful breeding program.

Courses are compiled from various modules (topics for modules include maize improvement, wheat improvement, basic/advanced statistics, seed production, biotechnology, GIS, crop protection, crop management, germplasm bank management, QPM, etc). Modules are designed to stand alone and can be compiled in different combinations, which give the flexibility for the creation of training courses according to the need of the region.

The minimum requirement for course participant’s level is a BSc in agriculture or a related discipline; however candidates with high school diploma and at least 3 years of field research experience may be accepted. Applicants are encouraged to seek for their own funding; however some scholarships may be available from CIMMYT’s special projects.

Participants in courses may continue their stay in CIMMYT for 1-2 weeks after the course (‘post training stay’) depending on the agreement with the sponsor and appropriate CIMMYT scientist.

II) Specialized custom-made courses based on requests/demands (1 – 14 day courses)

Specialized custom-made courses are programmed annually, according to the needs of interested institutions and countries. Custom-made courses are tailored for specific target audiences and are not necessarily based on modules (described above). These courses can be organized on regional, sub-regional, or in-country levels. Interested institutions must cover costs related to the organization of such course.

III) Farmers training (1 - 7 day training)

Farmers training is organized with NARS extension programs and is aimed to spread CIMMYT-generated cultivation methods and technologies among farmers’ communities in targeted areas. Examples of farmers training activities are: Implementation of Mother and Baby Trials, Family Training on Maize Production, Farmer Workshop on Risk Management Decision Guides, etc.
