International Winter Wheat Improvement Program (IWWIP) International Nurseries for 2007-2008 season

Turkey-CIMMYT-ICARDA IWWIP Program has reviewed the system of international nurseries in order to provide more targeted better adapted germplasm and improve the efficiency. The six international nurseries distributed from Turkey in the past have been transformed into four nurseries described below. While Winter Wheat Observation Nurseries (WWON-Irrigated and WWON-Semiarid) were canceled Facultative and Winter Wheat Observation Nursery (FAWWON) was expanded and diverged into independent Irrigated and Semi-arid nurseries. Winter Wheat East European Regional  Yield Trial (WWEERYT) and Elite Yield Trials (EYT-Irrigated and EYT-Semiarid) were transformed into two International Winter Wheat Yield Trials for Irrigated and Semiarid environments.

15th FAWWON-IR: 15th Facultative and Winter Wheat Observation Nursery for Irrigated Environments

This nursery with the global distribution addresses the irrigated and high rainfall environments with the yield level of 3-6 t/ha. Its objective is to offer diverse germplasm for evaluation on small plots (10 gr of seed is distributed) and selection of the best lines for utilization in crosses or further studies. Most of the entries in this nursery are semi-dwarf with the height of 70-90 cm. The nursery is composed of genotypes primarily resistant to yellow rust. The nursery contains 120 entries including the checks. The winter/facultative germplasm developed by Turkey-CIMMYT-ICARDA IWWIP Program comprises 45 lines (or 41%). The remaining germplasm originates from the breeding programs in Argentina, Bulgaria, Brazil, Chile, Hungary, Iran, Romania, Ukraine, Uruguay and USA which generously agreed to make their germplasm available under the Wheat Workers Code of Ethic. This introduced germplasm was pre-screened in Turkey for adaptation to irrigated environment and diseases. Around 100 sets of this nursery will be distributed globally for 2007-2008 season.

15th FAWWON-SA: 15th Facultative and Winter Wheat Observation Nursery for Semiarid Environments

This nursery with the global distribution targets dry environments with the yield level of 1-3 t/ha. Its objective is to offer diverse germplasm for evaluation on small plots (10 gr of seed is distributed) and selection of the best lines for utilization in crosses or further studies. Most of the entries in this nursery are tall with the height above 100 cm. The frequency of genotypes resistant to yellow rust is high in this nursery. The 15th FAAWON-SA is composed of 60 entries including the checks. The winter/facultative germplasm developed by Turkey-CIMMYT-ICARDA IWWIP Program comprises 33 lines (or 65%). The remaining germplasm originates from the breeding programs in Iran and USA which generously agreed to make their germplasm available under the Wheat Breeders Code of Ethic. This introduced germplasm was pre-screened in Turkey for adaptation to dry environment and diseases. Around 50 sets of this nursery will be distributed globally for 2007-2008 season.

11th IWWYT-IR: International Winter Wheat Yield Trial for Irrigated Environments

This nursery with primarily regional distribution in the region of Central and West Asia and Eastern Europe has objective of delivering more advanced germplasm to cooperators and verification of the germplasm yield performance in multilocational testing.  This season the nursery is composed of 20 entries developed by Turkey-CIMMYT-ICARDA IWWIP Program and 5 checks.  The germplasm went through three years of irrigated yield tests in several locations in Turkey and Syria and combines resistance to prevailing diseases. Each nursery set consists of 25 entries with two replications and 160 gr of seed per replication. In total 35 sets will be distributed for 2007-2008 season.

10th IWWYT-SA: International Winter Wheat Yield Trial for Semiarid Environments

This nursery with primarily regional distribution in the region of Central and West Asia and Eastern Europe has objective of delivering more advanced germplasm to cooperators and verification of the germplasm yield performance in multilocational testing.  This season the nursery is composed of 20 entries developed by Turkey-CIMMYT-ICARDA IWWIP Program and 5 checks.  The germplasm went through three years of yield tests in several locations in Turkey and Syria under moisture stress and combines resistance to prevailing diseases. Each nursery set consists of 25 entries with two replications and 180 gr of seed per replication. In total 30 sets will be distributed for 2007-2008 season.
