Dear Cooperator:
Since the beginning of 2004, CIMMYT is on
a new strategic course to address the challenges of international
agricultural research in the years to come: the need to bring
about a real improvement in the livelihoods of the poor; the
emerging biophysical, socioeconomic, and political constraints
to agriculture in developing countries; the growing range
of partners involved in research, extension, and development;
and the changing financial landscape for public-sector research.
A Quick Guide to the new CIMMYT can be found on www.cimmyt.org/english/docs/special_publ/quickGuide.htm.
Not all things at CIMMYT will change, however.
CIMMYT will continue to be the caretaker of the World's genetic
resources for maize and wheat, and a major distributor of
maize and wheat germplasm through international trials and
special seed shipments. Next to germplasm, our network of
partners worldwide will remain our most important asset. It
is through this network that CIMMYT germplasm gets evaluated,
released and new varieties benefit farmers world-wide. Your
feed-back assists us in further improving our products and
better meeting yours and farmers' needs. Anybody can use CIMMYT
germplasm for research purposes and, with permission from
CIMMYT and following country-specific laws and regulations,
register it for commercialization. As it is the trials that
you grow that establish the value of CIMMYT germplasm, you
can be as proud as we are when CIMMYT germplasm is released
and benefits farmers in your country.
This is a single consolidated announcement
for CIMMYT maize trials from Mexico, Colombia, Kenya and Zimbabwe.
The trials contain new hybrids and open-pollinated varieties
(OPVs) improved for broad adaptation, high yield potential
and for tolerance/resistance to prevalent abiotic and biotic
stresses.
During 2004/2005, a total of 30 trials will be available for
distribution from CIMMYT, Mexico, Colombia, Kenya and Zimbabwe.
Detailed information on these trials is provided in Tables
1-6 and Figure 1.
The eight-digit trial code system contains information on
the origin of the trial, maturity, grain color, type of material,
year tested, and adaptation. Explanation of the new trial
code is presented in Figure
2.
International trials from Mexico: Tables
1,
2
and 3
contain information on the sixteen trials suited for lowland
tropical, subtropical and highland environments that will
be distributed from CIMMYT, Mexico.
South American regional trials: Table 4
contains information on two trials that will be distributed
from CIMMYT, Colombia.
Eastern and Central African regional trials:
Table 5
contains information on seven trials that will be distributed
from CIMMYT, Kenya
Southern and Eastern African regional trials:
Table 6
contains information on five trials that will be distributed
from CIMMYT, Zimbabwe.
After going through the information on the
trials, please select the appropriate types of trials that
contain the germplasm that suit your requirements, taking
into consideration adaptation, grain color, maturity, type
of material, tolerance to specific stresses, etc. Once you
have made your decision on the trials you wish to grow, complete
the "trial request form" and "shipment information
form" attached to the respective list of trials. Please
note that some of the trials will be ready for shipment in
October/November 2004, whereas the rest will be ready for
shipment by March 2005.
The trial request form should have information
on the number of sets of each trial requested, expected date
of planting, and the probable testing location(s). In the
shipment information form, please describe your special shipping
needs (customs declarations, import permit requirements, and/or
phytosanitary restrictions). The completed forms should be
mailed to the respective addresses provided in the forms.
Pre-printed address labels are provided for your convenience.
In the case of international trials your request should be
sent to CIMMYT, Mexico, and in the case of regional trials,
to the respective CIMMYT regional offices. Another option
for requesting trials is to complete and submit the trial
request form on CIMMYT's web page (www.cimmyt.org; navigate
through the menu "Requesting Seed").
Since the number of trial sets available
is limited and demand usually exceeds supply every year, early
request of trials is recommended to ensure availability. If
an import permit is required to receive seeds in your country,
please apply for one with the appropriate authorities and
send a copy of the permit to CIMMYT, Mexico, and in the case
of regional trials, to the respective CIMMYT regional offices.
We hope that the materials offered in these
trials will prove useful for your research programs. If you
have any doubts about the most appropriate trials for your
environments, please do not hesitate to contact CIMMYT staff
either at headquarters or our regional office near you.
Thank you for your cooperation. We look
forward to hearing from you soon!
Sincerely,
Dr. Monica Mezzalama
Head, Seed Inspection and Distribution Unit
