7th INTERNATIONAL TRITICALE SYMPOSIUM
The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center
Ciudad Obregón, Sonora, Mexico
March 23rd – 26th, 2009

Dear Colleague,

The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) and the International Triticale Association (ITA) have the pleasure to announce the 7th International Triticale Symposium to be held in Ciudad Obregón, Sonora, Mexico, during March 23rd – 26th, 2009.

Ciudad Obregón, the site of CIMMYT’s largest wheat and triticale research station, is one of cradles of the “green revolution” for wheat and has been a critical site for the evolution of spring triticale into a commercial crop worldwide. It is there, in the early 1960s, that Dr. Norman Borlaug and his team introduced primary triticale from different parts of the world and started crossing them with the newly developed semi-dwarf, photoperiod-insensitive wheats of the green revolution. This work laid the basis for the triticale breeding project started officially under the leadership of Dr. Franck Zillinsky in 1964, which allowed CIMMYT, during the following decades, to contribute most of the spring triticale cultivars sown worldwide.

The main objective of this symposium is to bring together all researchers and industrial end users of triticale to exchange the latest results and experiences related to this crop. It is being held a year ahead of the normal “every 4th year” schedule to avoid conflict with the International Wheat Symposium scheduled in 2010. In addition, given the slowing down in growth of triticale area and research/promotion activities in developing countries, we felt that it was urgent to gather the triticale community in an attempt to counteract this negative trend. Consequently, we regard this symposium as an opportunity to assess the current status of triticale worldwide and its contribution to agricultural development and sustainability, and possibly provide a forum to re-energize triticale research and adoption activities in developing countries.

We are looking forward to seeing you in Ciudad Obregón.

With best regards,

Hans Joachim Braun
