10th Asian Regional Maize Workshop

The Indonesian Agency for Agricultural Research
and Development (IAARD) and the International Maize and Wheat Improvement
Center (CIMMYT) are pleased to announce the 10th
Asian Regional Maize Workshop to be held in Makassar, South
Sulawesi, Indonesia, 20-23 October 2008. Scientists and maize production
specialists of all disciplines, governmental and non-governmental
organizations, and seed industries are invited to participate and
submit contributions under the thematic areas listed below.

Theme: Maize
for Asia: Emerging Trends and Technologies
The following specific thematic areas are envisioned:
- Market Trends for
Maize in Asia (socioeconomic, physical and political environment;
changing demand and supply for maize; food, feed, industry, biofuel)
- Farming Systems
for Maize in Asia (resource conserving technologies, sustainable
agricultural practices, GIS, rice-maize systems, site-specific
nutrient management)
- Maize Breeding
Trends and Progress (conventional breeding, applications
of biotechnology, etc.)
- Abiotic and Biotic
Stresses (trends and progress with research on drought,
low-N, acid soils, water-logging, cold tolerance, tolerance to
diseases and insects, integrated pest management)
- Value-added maize:
(improving the value of maize: QPM, micronutrients, specialty
traits, etc.)
- Policies and Priorities
for Poverty Alleviation: (factors affecting impacts, access
to seed, socio-economic factors, gap analysis, etc.)
- Demand for and Supply of Maize Technologies:
(Who are the clients and what maize research products do they
need? What needs are being met and what gaps persist? Current
and needed trends in partnerships: Public-private sector, NGOs,
NARS-IARCs, etc.)

Workshop proceedings:
Abstracts of all workshop presentations, as well as of invited full
papers, will be published electronically. A high standard of contributions
and presentations at the workshop is expected. Potential participants
are invited to submit high quality abstracts electronically through
e-mail to the Workshop Secretariat for consideration by the review
panel. Screening of abstracts by a committee of peers will be based
on the research quality and relevance to the themes of the workshop.
Authors should indicate if they wish to make oral or poster presentations.
Due to the limited time available, the oral presentations will be
selected based on the quality of the abstracts and to give a diversity
of presentation topics and presenters. Those abstracts which are
accepted but could not be scheduled in oral presentations will be
presented as posters. Only participants with accepted papers will
be eligible for sponsorship to attend the workshop.

by the following deadlines, which will be implemented strictly:

Receipt of abstract submission form (word
file 36kb | pdf
version 19kb) and a concise Abstract (250 words plus one
table or figure) containing a brief summary of the objectives,
methods, and results of the research |
| 31 May 2008: |
Notice of provisional acceptance of Abstracts sent to authors. |
| 1 October 2008: |
Final manuscript of invited papers due. |
Guidelines to authors:
will be distributed together with the Notice of Acceptance of Abstracts.
Guidelines for preparation of oral and poster presentations will
be provided with final full paper acceptance.
Sponsorship:
Funding available to sponsor participants from the region is very
limited. Support provided through CIMMYT to attend will depend entirely
on the acceptance of the full paper by the Organizing Committee.
Independently sponsored participants are welcome, but their inclusion
on the program will also depend on acceptance of their full papers
by the Organizing Committee.
