Challenges
The central challenge is to increase the
impact of the global maize and wheat innovation network formed
by CIMMYT and its partners. This requires research with a
global focus to understand changes affecting the economic,
political, and institutional environments in which CIMMYT
operates; to identify cross-cutting issues that transcend
national and regional boundaries; to ensure that resources
are being used efficiently and effectively; to identify key
entry points for policy interventions; and to ensure the consistency
and coherency of CIMMYT's policies and statements on issues
of importance to the Center and its partners.
Activities
Scientists in CIMMYT's Socioeconomics Program
work with maize and wheat breeding and agronomy programs to
ensure the relevance of their efforts. They also pursue disciplinary
projects, such as studies on evolving markets and value chains;
design policy interventions and advocating for change; monitoring
trends in the global maize and wheat economies; and producing
new information and methods for research, policy advocacy,
and priority setting. Their efforts build on decades of strong
work and leadership by CIMMYT in agricultural economics and
impacts assessment, as well as on partnerships with advanced
research institutes.
