A Cost Study of Ex Situ Conservation

This page is the outcome of a study undertaken by the Systemwide Genetic Resources Program (SGRP) of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). This study was undertaken to elaborate the costs of ex situ conservation, using the case of the conservation of wheat and maize genetic resources at CIMMYT as an example. The paper will be available for downloading in either Adobe Acrobat or Microsoft Word Format.

The project was coordinated by Phil Pardey at IFPRI, with the collaboration and support of Bent Skovmand, head of wheat genetic resources at CIMMYT. Additional collaboration came from the CIMMYT Economics Program and from Suketoshi Taba, head of maize genetic resources at CIMMYT. The information for the project was gathered in the summer and fall of 1997 by Eric Van Dusen (University of California, Davis), and the paper was written in collaboration with Brian Wright (University of Calfornia, Berkeley).
